Congress, Do the Right Thing for DREAMers | Sunshine State News

As a child growing up in public housing, my mother always taught me that with hard work and a focus on education, I could accomplish my goals and live my dreams, the American dream. Unfortunately, that is not the case for hundreds of thousands of children in America today. Through no fault of their own, these children face uncertainty about their future and their ability to succeed or even remain in America. These are the “DREAMers,” the children who were brought to America by their parents via illegal immigration.  I’ve long been an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration and...

FPL Customers to Avoid Irma Costs after Tax Changes | Sunshine State News

Florida Power & Light said Tuesday that savings from the federal tax overhaul will allow it to avoid billing customers for the $1.3 billion cost of restoring electricity after Hurricane Irma. FPL had initially planned to start billing customers in March for the restoration costs but put those plans on hold after Congress and President Donald Trump last month approved the overhaul, which cut corporate tax rates and made numerous other changes in the federal tax code. In the announcement Tuesday, FPL said a 2016 agreement that set the utility’s base electric rates allowed it to “leverage” the tax...

Steube, La Rosa Drum Up Legislation to Save Vacation Rentals from Local Government Control | Sunshine State News

Two Florida lawmakers are proposing new regulations to limit control over vacation rentals in Florida, including renting through popular homesharing sites like Homeaway and Airbnb.  The pair of bills — SB 1400 and HB 773 — would limit the ability of local governments to regulate vacation rentals. The power to regulate vacation rentals would instead be granted to the Florida Division of Hotels and Restaurants, which licenses, inspects and regulates public lodging and food service establishments.
