What the Democrats got right and wrong at the debate
Last week, we spent most of our time fact-checking the Democratic debate in Las Vegas. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders mixed it up on a few issues, but we also saw a lot of agreement among the Democrats, including Jim Webb (former senator from Virginia), Martin O’Malley (former Maryland governor) and Lincoln Chafee (former senator and governor of Rhode Island).
Here are the best of last week’s fact-checks. Go to PolitiFact to see them all:
Hillary Clinton: Says Edward Snowden "could have gotten all of the protections of being a whistleblower." Mostly False.
Bernie Sanders: "We are imprisoning or giving jail sentences to young people who are smoking marijuana." Mostly False.
Hillary Clinton: "Sen. Sanders did vote five times against the Brady bill." True.
Bernie Sanders: "Today in America, we have more people in jail than any other country on Earth." Mostly True.
Lincoln Chafee: "I am very proud that over my almost 30 years of public service I have had no scandals." Mostly True.
Jim Webb: "Fifteen out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world" are in India and China. Mostly True.
