Gov. Rick Scott dug into the state treasury Friday for another $10 million to fight the spread of the Zika virus in , just days after returning from Washington with no deal on congressional funds.

Scott&;s action brings Florida&8217;s investment to $36.2 million to combat the mosquito-borne virus. The state has more than 800 Zika cases, including 77 transmitted within Florida.

&;Zika is non-partisan and I have been very clear that something had to get done this week,&; Scott said. &8220;While it doesn’t look like that is going to happen, I will not wait on the federal government to protect Floridians and our visitors.&8221;

Congress continues to battle over Zika funding. The Obama administration in February requested $1.9 billion, but the Republican-led Congress refused to support that level of funding and has since deadlocked for months on the bottom-line amount needed.

The additional money approved by Scott will go toward mosquito abatement and personnel training, lab work and the purchase of Zika virus prevention kits from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
