Democrat Patrick Murphy turned up the heat Monday on Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio for not breaking with Donald Trump over a 2005 tape showing the GOP presidential nominee bragging about kissing and groping women.

Rubio sent out a tweet Friday night after the campaign bombshell burst condemning Trump’s comments, calling them “vulgar, egregious and impossible to justify.”

Murphy, though, says Rubio should join a host of prominent Republicans who have withdrawn their support for Trump, saying they concluded he is “entirely unfit to be our next president.”

“But what about Marco Rubio, some might ask?” Murphy said, during a conference call with reporters, which included Cecile Richards, president of  the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Murphy said Rubio “responded to Donald Trump’s dangerous misogyny with a single tweet and then has been silent ever since.”

“Florida women and families deserve better than a tweet,” Murphy said.

Murphy comments followed a new NBC poll that showed him 2 percentage points behind Rubio, within the survey’s margin-of-error. The poll was taken before the Friday release of the Trump tape.

Rubio, however, continues to hold a slightly stronger, 4.4 percent edge, when factoring in other recent polls. And Rubio is up Monday with a new Spanish-language TV spot, his fourth of his re-election campaign.

Richards joined Murphy in the attack on Rubio because of his Trump connection, saying the presidential candidate as “dismissed, insulted and bullied women his entire career.”

Both also pointed out that the two Republicans share common policy stands when it comes to restricting access to abortion and eliminating funding of Planned Parenthood.
