Part-time Palm Beach resident and President-elect Donald Trump, less than two weeks away from being sworn in as commander-in-chief, used his Twitter account this morning to blast actress Meryl Streep as an “over-rated…Hillary flunky” after Streep criticized him during a Golden Globes speech Sunday.
Streep, who was receiving a lifetime achievement award, criticized Trump for his November 2015 mockery of reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a condition called arthrogryposis that restricts the movement in his arms.
“You gotta see this guy….’Oh, I don’t know what I said. I don’t remember…’” Trump said during a 2015 speech in Alabama, flailing his arms and contorting his face.
Trump’s Republican presidential foes, Democrat Hillary Clinton and others accused Trump of making fun of Kovaleski’s disability. Trump denies doing so, saying he was merely imitating the reporter “groveling” and backing away from a story he wrote in 2001.
Streep said Sunday that Trump’s imitation of Kovaleski “kind of broke my heart when I saw it…This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”
Trump responded in a series of tweets this morning.
“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!” Trump said.
